Proposed Redistricting Maps to be Considered on January 9

The Florida House’s Redistricting subcommittees officially noticed meetings for Monday, January 9, 2012 – at which time they will consider proposed committee bills (PCBs) for the State House, State Senate and Congressional maps.

If you have not already, you can check out the proposed maps and related information via the Redistricting Bills button at www.floridaredistricting.org (or directly at  http://www.myfloridahouse.gov/Sections/Redistricting/Redistricting2012.aspx).

The maps are identical to those that were released on December 6 and workshopped in the subcommittees on December 8, 2011.

The Congressional Redistricting Subcommittee and Senate Redistricting Subcommittee will both meet from 12:00 p.m. to 2:30 p.m.  The House Redistricting Subcommittee will meet from 3:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m.

2012 Qualifying Week Changed to June 4-8, 2012

Note, recent changes to Florida election laws advanced the 2012 Primary Election by two weeks.  See House Bill 1355 at http://1.usa.gov/kZgNXH, page 49, lines 1369-1370.  Therefore, the Primary Election will occur August 14, 2012.

As a result, 2012 qualifying for state and federal office (state legislature, congress) is also moved up two weeks.  “Qualifying week,” as it is often referred to, will be June 4-8, 2012

We will be amending several of our public outreach documents to reflect the new qualifying week.  If you utilize any of our old presentations for the purpose of public outreach, please make sure to note the change in the qualifying week.

Qualifying for state and federal office occurs in the same week “in each year in which the Legislature apportions the state” (redistricting).  See section 99.061 (9), Florida Statutes at http://bit.ly/eYpkBE.
